Ishmael

Ishmael. A wanderer, an observer, a survivor, and ultimately, a storyteller. A human who makes his own way in the world, putting himself in situations not quite fitting who he seems to be. Wandering into situations not always very comfortable, watching, learning, and living to tell whatever tale there is to tell, as best he can. Hopefully, also making some sense for himself of the confusing, uncertain, and not always so human ways of the world.

But that keeps him connected to the world, I think. You don't need to be on a Nantucket whaler to feel lost to everything, but it's your hand on the tiller and rare if you can't find at least one favorable gust of wind. Not easy, and sometimes scary to follow that gust through a storm, but there's worse ways, less human ways, of living.

So. That's what this online thing is gonna try to be about. Wandering. Learning. Coming out the other side. Steering one's own course. You probably won't hear about my favorite movie, or favorite fast food joint, the past and present women of my affections, or why the Cubs and Bengals remain dear to my heart even in continued mediocrity. Unless of course, there is a deeper point to it. Though this is my site, and it's kinda about me, I want it to be more about the parts that make us human, the abilities, the paradoxes, the prejudices, the passions, and the curiosities. About us.

As for me, I am a wanderer of a sort. My mind, my reading, my concerns travel broadly. And I observe. I like to mull over what I find. Often, I think with my mouth open, a way of bouncing growing ideas off of those fortunate (or unfortunate) souls around me. Here, dear readers, that would now be you. Hopefully, I can make a good story out of it, or at least give you all food for thought on a variety of topics.

So read on, and don't be quiet. Jacques Cousteau said "When you enter the ocean, you enter the food chain, and not necessarily at the top". I believe it. Just because I put something out in text here, or because I just *think* something is a certain way, it doesn't mean it is definitive to me, or that there aren't folks out there who have better ideas, deeper considerations. I don't mind being re-educated. Finding out you're wrong is one of the more effective ways to finding the way to being right.
